Are you in the market for a new car this year? Do you have a favorite make and model? How about a favorite color? On a recent survey conducted by PPG, a global manufacturer of paints and coatings (among other products), 60% of the respondents agreed that “color” is part of the purchasing decision. Also, according to PPG, blue is the color that has made the biggest impact on 2017 model vehicles.
For Community Auto Body, Inc. in Carol Stream, “color” is also an important factor in the repair process. Unfortunately, fate does not distinguish between brand new or older vehicles that get into accidents. So, as a reputable collision repair shop, it becomes our responsibility to ensure that when the vehicle is refinished after the repair, it’s a perfect match.
Although in the United States the majority of cars sold (or about 75 percent) feature nondescript colors such as white (23 percent), black (19 percent), gray (17 percent) and silver (15 percent), the other colors of the spectrum play a significant part in the customization process.
Of these colors, it is “blue” that is making the biggest noise, as its popularity continues to increase. Notably, shades of blue account for 8 percent of all cars to be manufactured in North America in 2017—a 3 percent increase over last year—quickly edging up to red, which currently takes 10 percent of the pie.
Why blue? In a recent statement, Jane Harrington, PPG manager, color styling, automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) coatings, said: “Blue is a very versatile color for the automotive market, because subtle shifts in hue, Chroma and flake appearance of a blue coating can do a lot to enhance a vehicle’s style or distinguish a brand.”
In addition to color, each year four distinct lifestyle trends are taken into consideration to determine the appropriate hues.
PPG’s color palletes for 2017 are:
HOUR GLASS – The Hourglass theme represents the element Earth, a trend rooted in foundations, origins, consumers finding stability in updating the familiar and borrowing designs from our classics and historic relevance.
ESSENSE – The Essense theme represents Water, aptly named, as water is the essence of all life. Nothing could be simpler and more pure than that. Likewise, Essense is a theme about purity and simplicity in design as well as purifying and simplifying one’s life.
IMPOWER – The ImPower theme represents the Fire element. Where there is fire, there is always change; what alights will be forever altered. Fire forces one to be truly present in the current moment. ImPower as a theme represents a consumer who embraces change and progressively welcomes the alterations that come as a new, different way of living.
BIOCENTRIC – The BioCentric theme represents the Air element in the grandest sense. It is not just the air we breathe on Earth, but includes the cosmic winds that run through every part of our universe. In this way, BioCentric represents a consumer and a design philosophy that we are all connected. Galactic energy is more a part of everyday life than we may think, and the universe is once again becoming a design influence.
Since 2012, Community Auto Body, Inc. in Carol Stream has used PPG waterborne basecoat paint technology in the refinishing process, with continuous color and finish updates as new vehicles debut into the market.
